Stopping three laps early can gain you three seconds without an overtake - but Marina Bay's twenty-two second pit lane breaks the maths

Transcript

Katy

Lap twelve. Verstappen is three point seven seconds behind Piastri and he cannot get near him. So Red Bull do the thing that sounds insane... they throw away track position. Box, box. Two laps later, both cars stopped, the same two drivers on the same bit of tarmac - and that deficit is now a six point three second swing in Verstappen's favour.

Theo

Hang on. He never actually passed him?

Katy

Never touched him. Barcelona, this season. The overtake happened in the pit lane.

Theo

See, this is the bit I find quietly offensive to physics. You stop. You sit still. In Singapore tonight that costs you what, twenty seconds?

Katy

Twenty-two point four four. That's Formula One's own number for Marina Bay, averaged across the last six races. Pirelli round it to twenty-two. You hand your rival twenty-two seconds of free running... and you come out ahead.

Theo

Okay. Convince me.

Katy

Three phases. In-lap, stop, out-lap. On the in-lap you stop protecting the tyre - you empty it, because who cares, it's going in the bin. Then the stop. Then the out-lap, and that's where the race is actually decided. Brand new rubber, clean air, while the guy ahead is nursing tyres fifteen laps old.

Theo

And new rubber is worth... how much? Per lap.

Katy

F1 Chronicle crunched seven hundred and sixty-six undercut attempts from twenty twenty-two to now. A successful one typically gains between half a second and two and a half.

Theo

Half a second. That's not a knife fight, that's a mild disagreement.

Katy

It is when you stack it. Pit three laps early and you bank it three times. Then he pits, loses his twenty-two, and rejoins into the hole you just dug. Austin, twenty twenty-one - Verstappen stops three laps before Hamilton in the first stint and comes out of the cycle about six seconds up.

Theo

So it's not one heroic lap. It's compound interest.

Katy

Compound interest with a stopwatch. And nobody's guessing. Mini-sector data, live, a model predicting metre by metre where you rejoin.

Theo

Then it should never surprise anyone. Ever.

Katy

Right. Except. The Race broke down one Hamilton-Verstappen stop where Mercedes were comfortable, left Hamilton out one extra lap - and the maths came apart in three places at once. Verstappen gains six tenths on the in-lap. One point eight on the out-lap. And his stop is point four six quicker in the pit lane.

Theo

That's... that's all of it. Added up that's the whole lead.

Katy

All of it. And here's the part that gets me. Hamilton is told on the radio, after his stop, that Verstappen should be one and a half seconds behind. He wasn't. He was alongside, down the inside of turn one.

Theo

You're racing a number in your ear and the number's already expired.

Katy

Verstappen called the pace he found on those tyres very unexpected. Nobody in that moment understood what had happened. The model had the right inputs - a lap too late.

Theo

So why doesn't everyone just pit on lap one and go home?

Katy

Because the undercut has one enemy, and it's heat. The tyre has to switch on instantly. If the compound needs three laps to wake up, your out-lap is slow and you've burned twenty-two seconds for nothing. Soft warms fast, dies fast. Hard starts cold, lasts forever. That trade IS the call.

Theo

And you rejoin into traffic, presumably.

Katy

Kills it stone dead. Gain two seconds in theory, lose five behind a car that's two laps from its own stop.

Theo

Which brings us to tonight.

Katy

Round seventeen. Marina Bay, ninth to eleventh of October, last sprint weekend of the season. Pirelli have brought C three, C four, C five, and they're expecting low degradation - mainly the rear axle fading under traction. Which is terrible news for the undercut.

Theo

Because if the old tyres aren't dying, the new ones aren't worth anything.

Katy

Exactly. Singapore's historically a one-stopper for precisely that reason - long pit loss, frequent safety cars. Formula One's own preview this week argues the smart play here is the opposite move. Go long on the first stint, build a tyre delta, attack in a short second stint. They headline it the strategic masterstroke.

Theo

So the undercut's a tool, not a religion.

Katy

And sometimes it isn't about stopping first at all. Last weekend at Sepang - Hamilton and Hadjar pit on the same lap. Lap thirty-one. Hamilton's five point one nine behind. Three laps later he's zero point five three seven behind.

Theo

Same lap? Same pit lane?

Katy

Same everything. He just drove better out-laps.

Theo

So the undercut... isn't really the pit stop.

Katy

It never was. The stop is the excuse. It's the two laps either side - the in-lap where you spend the tyre, and the out-lap where you spend yourself.

Theo

And you can get every bit of it right and still lose to a point four six second pit stop.

Katy

That's the lesson. Every strategy call in this sport looks like a decision, and it's really a bet on a human being perfect for ninety seconds while thirty thousand people scream. The model says Hamilton rejoins ahead. The model is right. The model is just not fast enough.

Theo

And by the time it updates, Verstappen's already turning in.

Katy

Tonight, under the lights, some engineer is going to say box this lap. What he means is: the next ninety seconds are worth more than the twenty-two I'm about to take from you.
