How Red Bull Built the RB19, the Car That Won Twenty-One of Twenty-Two Races

Katy & TheoEpisode 1 of Formula 1 Unboxed6 min

The designer said the dominance was a complete surprise. Three years later, the same team started a season fourth-fastest.

Katy

Twenty-two races in a season. Red Bull won twenty-one of them. Max Verstappen took nineteen on his own, ten of those back to back, and the team finished the year on eight hundred and sixty points... the highest single-season score in the history of the sport.

Theo

Twenty-one out of twenty-two. Okay, I have to know. Who got the one?

Katy

Singapore. One race, all year. And here's the part that still bothers me... the man who drew that car says he didn't expect any of it. Adrian Newey called the RB19's dominance a complete surprise.

Theo

Come on. The most successful car anyone's ever built, and the designer's going, huh, didn't see that coming?

Katy

His logic was actually sound. Twenty twenty-three was the second year of the ground-effect rules, and second seasons are when everybody catches up. Newey assumed the gap would shrink. Instead it grew. Hold onto that, because three years later it's Red Bull doing the chasing.

Theo

So why didn't it shrink? What did everyone else miss?

Katy

They were copying the wrong thing. Everyone stared at Red Bull's bodywork and saw sidepods. Newey wasn't selling sidepods. He was selling what happens underneath them.

Theo

The floor.

Katy

The floor. Under these rules the car is basically an upside-down wing. Air gets sucked through tunnels underneath, speed goes up, pressure drops, and the whole thing is pulled down onto the track. Downforce without much drag.

Theo

Free grip.

Katy

Nearly free. And the entire trick is feeding that floor clean, fast, undisturbed air. So Red Bull carved a dramatic undercut into the sides of the car... The Race described it as straying into twin-floor territory. Then they ramped the top surface downward, so air washed down off the body toward the gap between the rear wheels.

Theo

That's the downwash thing commentators wouldn't shut up about.

Katy

That's it. More air down the sides, pulling harder on the diffuser, making the underbody work harder. And they never stopped fiddling. By the Hungarian Grand Prix the sidepod inlet had exactly the same surface area as before... just redistributed. Slimmer, longer, shaped so turbulent air off the front wheels couldn't contaminate it.

Theo

So it's not one breakthrough. It's a thousand small ones all pointing the same way.

Katy

Which is the culture point. The RB18 in twenty twenty-two was the concept. The RB19 just piled downforce onto a platform they already knew was right. Mark Hughes put it well... the rightness of that concept was down to Newey. Everyone else was still reverse-engineering the question while Red Bull were busy answering it.

Theo

Hang on though. Weren't they the team that got done for the budget cap? How does the punished team end up with the best car?

Katy

They were. The FIA ruled Red Bull overspent the twenty twenty-one cap by one point eight million pounds. Seven million dollar fine, and their aerodynamic testing allocation cut from seventy percent of the reference total down to sixty-three.

Theo

That's wind tunnel time. The one thing you can't buy back.

Katy

And here's where it gets clever... or cynical, depending where you sit. By Hungary in twenty twenty-three, Christian Horner confirmed they'd stopped developing the RB19 almost entirely. They were so far ahead they banked the leftover tunnel time for next year's car.

Theo

They were winning so hard they could afford to stop trying?

Katy

Horner said it out loud. Spend the time on the RB twenty instead. And Verstappen won his fourth straight title in twenty twenty-four.

Theo

And then it all falls apart. Because that is very much not where we are now.

Katy

Not even close. Newey left for Aston Martin. Horner was sacked as team boss during twenty twenty-five... Verstappen actually won the very next race. And in Abu Dhabi the run of four titles ended. Lando Norris took his first championship. Verstappen finished second, four hundred and twenty-one points.

Theo

Ninety-five percent win rate to runner-up. In two years.

Katy

And this season is harder again. New regulations, and Red Bull building their own power unit with Ford for the first time. At the car launch in Detroit, Verstappen said plainly that he needed time to adjust.

Theo

How's that going?

Katy

They started twenty twenty-six with the fourth-fastest car. Then a big upgrade push out of Milton Keynes, and by the Austrian Grand Prix in the summer he was second on the road, chasing George Russell. But asked about the title, he pointed at a ninety-eight point gap to Kimi Antonelli and said... it's very big. That was reported in early July. The gap has been the story ever since.

Theo

So the Singapore thing, the one race they lost... that was the whole margin of error, and nobody noticed.

Katy

Nobody noticed because the lesson was never sidepods. The RB19 proves dominance in this sport is never one part. It's a concept understood a year before anybody else, a design office allowed to chase it, and the nerve to stop developing a winning car to protect the next one.

Theo

And every one of those is a person. Who can walk out the door.

Katy

That's the uncomfortable truth about every dynasty in Formula One. The car was never the advantage. The people who knew WHY it worked were.
