Anis Maknojia: From Houston to Land Ahoy! Films
He ran gas stations in Houston. Then a phone camera, a breakup and Instagram rerouted his whole life.
Transcript
A man is sitting in Houston, Texas, running his family's convenience stores and gas stations. He's just buried a close friend. Two business ventures have failed. He's had his heart broken by what he calls a hurtful betrayal. And he picks up... his cellphone. Not to call anyone. To take a picture.
Of what?
Of anything. He said later that he looked for scenes that reminded him of himself. His words: things that were right there in the middle of everything, but maybe not quite noticed for their full potential.
Oof. That's a very specific kind of lonely.
His name is Anis Maknojia. And here's the thing I want you to hold onto: within roughly a year of posting those photos, he's living in Los Angeles. Within a few months of THAT, he's the lead actor in a crime film on the Sunset Strip.
Hang on. From gas stations to a lead role? What's the missing step? Because that's not how Hollywood works.
The missing step is Instagram, and I'll get to exactly how fast it moved. But start at the beginning. Houston, oil town. Son of Indian immigrants. His parents built a retail business, worked constantly, and he worked alongside them while getting a bachelor's in supply chain management at the University of Houston.
Supply chain. The least glamorous degree ever invented.
And then he takes over the business entirely so his parents can retire. Which is the immigrant-kid dream ending, right? Mission complete. Except then the losses pile up in the space of a few months, and he describes himself spiraling, physically and mentally.
With a support network around him, presumably. Family, friends.
Friends and family, yes. And it still happened. That's the part worth saying out loud. In twenty seventeen he starts posting the photos. He goes from a phone camera to a proper one, and he starts doing self-portraits.
Self-portraits. The guy who felt unnoticed starts photographing himself. That's... almost too neat.
He's pretty open about the mechanics of it. He said taking pictures, editing them to capture what he was feeling, then wrapping it up with a caption from a positive place... was a way to escape, a way through the darkness.
Okay, but I'm going to be the annoying one. Lots of people post sad beautiful photos. Almost none of them end up in a Mercedes commercial.
Fair. So here's the number. Eight months after his first few images, the account's racing toward eighty thousand followers. Today it's north of eighty-five thousand.
Eight months?
Eight months. And in twenty eighteen he moves to Los Angeles, financed, and this is the unsexy bit, by the family business. The gas stations paid for the leap.
So the supply chain degree WAS the origin story.
Completely. And the leap pays. Late twenty nineteen into twenty twenty he's doing campaigns for Mercedes-Benz, Giorgio Armani, Don Julio Tequila. Luxury model. Which is not what he came to LA to do.
What did he come to do?
Produce. That was the plan. He told Naluda Magazine he came with a plan in mind and almost immediately changed it. He'd set out to produce a film... and ended up acting in it as well.
Accidentally cast yourself. Bold.
The film is a short crime drama called Artifice, with Phoenix 4 Productions. He plays Tony, a man who takes one reckless chance to move up in the world and watches his life spiral over the next eight years. And Anis specifically wanted that lead... because of his race.
Meaning what, exactly?
Meaning it could have been a cookie-cutter part, and he saw a chance to bring something unexpected to it. That instinct becomes the company. Land Ahoy! Films, founded in twenty nineteen, Hollywood. Mission statement, three words: we are stronger together.
Which is the kind of thing everyone says.
Sure. So judge it by output. With Interest, a mob debt collector who falls in love with stand-up comedy. Breathe, interconnected stories about drugs, violence and religion. He acts and executive produces.
And then the pandemic hits and everything stops, I assume.
Opposite. He flies back to Houston to sort out COVID problems at the family business. Being out of his LA routine unlocks a slasher idea he'd been sitting on for years. He calls it Jack.
How long did that take?
Two weeks. Start to finish. Three of those days were the shoot.
Two WEEKS? That's not possible.
He said the same thing. His line was, saying it out loud, it seems sort of impossible. The reason it worked is brutal and honest: the pandemic meant everyone he needed was available on short notice. Director Frederick Tabiyus Nah the Fourth built the structure, writer Joseph Carlin wrote it from Anis's story idea.
So the shutdown was the casting call.
And remember the loop. The missing step wasn't talent spotted by an agent. It was a broken man with a phone, who kept showing up, and who had a boring business behind him that could fund the gamble.
So the lesson is... keep the gas stations.
Honestly, partly. But his real lesson is the flexibility one. He said coming to LA and immediately changing his plan was a great lesson in taking your opportunities when they show up.
Not dropping the plan. Pausing it.
Right. He went looking for things sitting in the middle of everything, not quite noticed for their full potential... and the one he finally photographed properly was himself.
