Six words on X pulled a Y Combinator partner into a fight with the Trump administration.

Transcript

Katy

Six words. That's all it took. "In a win for the woke left DEI is back."

Theo

That's it? Who said it, and why do I care?

Katy

Ankit Gupta. General partner at Y Combinator, the most famous startup accelerator on earth. He posted that in August twenty twenty-six, replying to Vice President JD Vance. And within days he'd been publicly slapped down by the chairman of the Federal Trade Commission, an assistant attorney general, and the Labor Department's Inspector General.

Theo

Over one sarcastic tweet.

Katy

Over one sarcastic tweet. And here's the question I want you holding onto... did anything actually happen to him? Because the loudest internet pile-on of the year can still end in absolutely nothing.

Theo

Okay, back up. What did Vance say?

Katy

Vance was reacting to a new H-1B visa fee. He wrote, "If an American corporation needs workers, it should hire and train Americans." Simple. Patriotic. Hard to argue with on its face.

Theo

And Gupta's read was... that's DEI?

Katy

His logic was, if you hire someone because they're American rather than because they're the best, you're propping up a preferred group. Which is the exact argument conservatives used to dismantle diversity programs. He turned it around on them.

Theo

That's a clever move and a terrible move at the same time.

Katy

It's the kind of thing that's very satisfying to type at eleven at night and ruinous at nine the next morning.

Theo

And people noticed fast?

Katy

Anthony D'Esposito, the Labor Department's Inspector General, replied directly. Quote: "Ankit Gupta thinks hiring Americans first — in America — is 'DEI.' No, Ankit. It's called putting your own citizens first... If that offends you, the problem isn't America. It's your sense of entitlement."

Theo

A federal official name-checking a venture capitalist. That's not normal.

Katy

It got less normal. FTC Chairman Andrew Ferguson weighed in and didn't just hit Gupta, he hit the firm. He said Y Combinator is "a supposed champion of Little Tech but perhaps they're nothing more than a front for the far left." And then, "The purpose of the American economy is to promote the general welfare of American workers, not provide jobs for the rest of the world." That's Ferguson's line, yes. And the chairman of the FTC saying that about a firm whose portfolio companies he could, in theory, regulate... that's a real chill down the spine.

Theo

Did Gupta argue back?

Katy

He did, and this is where it tips over. He challenged a critic: "What elements of H-1B immigrant culture do you not like? Is it the willingness to work long hours? Or perhaps the education focus of their children?" The guy came back with a genuinely ugly list — leaving trash everywhere, scamming, dishonesty. And Gupta replied, three words: "It's giving flyover country."

Theo

Oh no.

Katy

Oh yes. And instantly people flipped it on him. One post read, roughly: hey Y Combinator, this is a racist attack aimed at rural white Americans, your own policies say racial discrimination is a fireable offense, when can we expect you to fire Ankit Gupta? Exactly. Whatever you think of the argument, he'd handed his opponents the same weapon he was swinging.

Theo

So what did YC do?

Katy

Garry Tan, YC's president and CEO — himself an immigrant from Canada — posted five words. "YC supports hiring and funding Americans." That's it. No defence of Gupta. No condemnation either. Just... distance.

Theo

That is a masterclass in saying nothing.

Katy

And Gupta went quiet. Made his X account private. Deleted the post. Ferguson then posted a screenshot showing Gupta had blocked him.

Theo

He blocked the FTC chairman.

Katy

He blocked the FTC chairman.

Theo

Okay but who is this guy, actually? Is he some random?

Katy

Not at all. Co-founder and chief technology officer of Reverie Labs, machine learning for drug discovery — they got their own medicines into clinical trials, and Ginkgo Bioworks acquired them in twenty twenty-four. He became a YC general partner in twenty twenty-five. Real builder. Not a poster by trade.

Theo

So the pile-on. Did he lose the job?

Katy

Here's the payoff. No. As of the reporting, neither Gupta nor Y Combinator announced any change — not to hiring, not to investment strategy, not to his role. YC and Gupta didn't respond to Fox News at all. The fire burned loud and then it just... sat there.

Theo

So the pile-on achieved nothing?

Katy

Not nothing. Harmeet Dhillon, the assistant attorney general for civil rights, used the moment — and then pointedly said it wasn't about Gupta. Her words: "This is not aimed at Y Combinator or one guy popping off — this problem permeates American industry and academia, and it's a bipartisan scandal." Meanwhile Homeland Security is pushing a roughly one hundred and three thousand dollar fee on many H-1B petitions.

Theo

So he was the lightning rod, not the storm.

Katy

That's it. And the lesson for anyone who posts under their employer's name: your argument can be defensible and your phrasing can still be the only thing anyone remembers. He had a point about merit. Nobody heard it.

Theo

Because of three words about flyover country.

Katy

Three words. The tweet is gone. The screenshot isn't.
