Somewhere in India right now, a twenty-six-year-old is sitting on the edge of her bed, phone in hand, paying by the minute to ask a stranger whether she should marry him.
By the minute? Like a taxi meter?
Exactly like a taxi meter. And that one call is a unit inside a business that did eleven hundred and seventy-six crore rupees last financial year. Call it a hundred and forty million dollars... from horoscopes.
Horoscopes are a newspaper column next to the crossword. How is that a hundred and forty million dollars?
Hold that question. Because when we open the accounts, the single biggest cost in this company is filed under legal and professional fees. Sixty percent of everything they spend.
Lawyers? An astrology app is mostly LAWYERS?
We'll get there. Start with the founder. The company is Astrotalk, in Noida, started in twenty seventeen by Puneet Gupta and Anmol Jain. Reporting on Gupta says he came out of finance... Nomura, BNP Paribas... then an IT venture that failed, and he went to see an astrologer himself.
And walked out with a business plan instead of a prophecy.
A marketplace. Uber, but the drivers are astrologers. Thousands of them, verified, and the app routes you to whoever's free, in your language, right now.
Fine, but what's the real volume? I'm picturing a few thousand calls a week.
Four and a half MILLION paid sessions a month, according to Inc42. Plus about six million free ones. Mostly marriage and relationships. Second most common reason people call... work.
Four and a half million. That's not a niche. That's a utility.
And the curve is vertical. Two hundred and eighty-three crore in the year to March twenty twenty-three. Six hundred and fifty-one the next. Eleven seventy-six after that. Gupta told Inc42 he expects around eighteen fifty this year.
Quadrupling in two years usually means someone's burning cash to buy it. Is any of this actually profit?
That's the twist. Profit in the twenty twenty-four year jumped about one thousand and eighty percent, to just under a hundred crore. This was profitable before it was famous. And it's raised only around thirty million dollars, total.
Thirty million. Some startups spend that on office snacks and beanbags.
Roughly. Valued at three hundred million in mid twenty twenty-four, and reported to have hit a billion-dollar valuation in twenty twenty-six through an employee share buyback.
Okay. Now give me the lawyers.
There are no lawyers. Three hundred and nineteen crore of legal and professional fees... is the astrologers. They're not employees, they're contractors, so their pay lands in that line. Actual staff salaries were under thirty crore.
So it's a gig platform wearing a spiritual costume.
That's the honest description. Next biggest line is advertising. A hundred and sixty-two crore, up a hundred and sixteen percent in a year. And like every marketplace, it wants to sell you a thing, not a minute. So there's now a gemstone store. Lab-certified stones, hundreds of products, aiming at four to five hundred crore of annual run rate by twenty twenty-seven.
The reading is the funnel. The ruby is the margin.
International was about twenty percent of revenue in the twenty twenty-five year. Gupta says thirty-seven percent this year. And the United States alone is more than sixty percent of that.
Americans are ringing Indian astrologers at scale?
Diaspora first, then beyond. Meanwhile the research firm MarkNtel values India's entire astrology app market at a hundred and sixty-three million dollars.
Hang on. One company's revenue is nearly the whole market it's in? Lovely maths.
Which tells you those market-size numbers are guesses. Nobody counts the street-corner astrologer, the family pandit, the cash envelope. The apps are just the part that files accounts.
And the customers are older and rural, I assume.
Opposite. Young, roughly eighteen to thirty-five, smartphone-first, urban and semi-urban. Survey aggregators cite a twenty nineteen YouGov poll saying around seventy percent of Indians consult astrologers on big decisions, and Lokniti-CSDS data showing belief is higher in cities than villages. Hold those loosely... but the direction's clear.
Then here's my real question. If I sell you a financial forecast, there are rules. Is any of this regulated?
No specific central law covers astrology in India. No licensing body. No professional regulator. And in twenty eleven the Bombay High Court dismissed a challenge to astrologers' predictions, noting the Supreme Court had ruled in two thousand and four that astrology is a science.
So I get more consumer protection buying a toaster than buying advice about my marriage.
You get a receipt and a per-minute rate. That's the whole safety net.
Then why NOW? Astrology's thousands of years old. Why is the money arriving this decade?
Because the product isn't prediction. It's a stranger who'll listen at two in the morning about your marriage or your job, without judging you, and without the word therapy attached. The planets are the packaging.
That's... quietly sad. And completely understandable.
It's both. And the lesson for your own money is simple. When uncertainty gets uncomfortable enough, somebody will build a meter... and charge you by the minute for the feeling of knowing.
